Feel free to do absolutely nothing but gaze out of the windows, but if you are feeling more energetic there's a wealth of interesting places nearby as well as - it goes without saying - the most amazing landscape. We are happy to help and advise whenever we can.

EATING OUT / SHOPPING We especially like the following places: The Samling, a top local hotel between Ambleside and Windermere where an elegant and slightly formal lunch or dinner is a treat Tarantella, a small Italian place in Ambleside with a nicely seasonal menu
The Church House Inn, an historic inn between Coniston and Torver with an up to date take on local dishes and ingredients
The Queen's Head, Troutbeck - a characterful pub great for a weekend lunch, between Ambleside and Windermere
The Cuckoo Brow Inn, the Shack's nearest pub in Far Sawrey, a very down to earth family inn where walkers and dogs can enjoy hearty and good value traditional food
Chesters, Chapel Stile, Langdale - lunch or tea with a nice interiors / gift shop next door
Booths Supermarkets, (Kendal, Windermere & Ulverston) - the place for a localy-sourced, quality stock-up and perhaps unexpectedly, one of the best places locally for a cooked breakfast or quick lunch
Howbarrow Organic, Order locally sourced organic meat, fruit and vegetables delivered to your door during your stay
Nearby Sawrey has a village shop open daily from Spring to early Autumn (15 mins walk from Shack) and Hawkshead nearby
